Ellu podi til chutney powder aka sesame seeds gun powder is a must in our home. Mom stores either this powder or peanut podi and its always available in dining table. During childhood days if we don’t have anything to snack while roaming here and there we gulp spoonful of podi :-). Sometimes when bored to make curry/dal, this podi mixed with ghee and rice is enough to finish off your meal. Now I make this podi among few chutney powders for my Hubby when I am out for vacations. I have mentioned red chilis for a moderate spiciness please feel free to increase it.
Ingredients
White or Black Sesame seeds – 1 Cup
Cumin Seeds – 2 tsp
Pepper Corns – 1 tsp
Red Chili – 2 Numbers (increase the quantity for more spiciness)
Curry Leaves – Few
Salt – As Required
How to make Ellu Podi
- Dry roast the sesame seeds with salt till light golden brown.
- Transfer it in to another plate and allow to cool.
- In the same pan dry roast all the other ingredients till nice aroma arrives.
- Blend all together to coarse powder.
- Make sure all the ingredients are cooled completely before grinding, otherwise sesame seeds leave oil.
- While blending use pulse option in your mixie and make it coarse.
- When the powder/podi rolls together while grinding do stop the processor immediately.
- By mistake if podi turns oily it doesn’t matter anyways its going to be mixed with oil before consumption.
- Best to go with rice/idli/dosa.
- In the same way you can make Peanut podi.
I have served ellu podi with idli batter ground using mixie and spicy peanut chutney.
